Whether you like what you read here or not, be thankful that you can. I can write pretty much whatever I want here without having to get permission from the government or worrying that I’ll be taken away in the dead of night. My family won’t be hurt by government goon squads because of what I write here. And you can read what you want free from fear as long as you aren’t plotting destruction or downloading child pornography.
Our government of the people, by the people, and for the people isn’t perfect, but the fact that we try to protect the individual’s right to say whatever he or she wants makes us unique. Even in Western Europe, where social policies are pretty liberal, it’s an accepted idea that personal freedoms can and should be restricted for the good of society. I often don’t like what my fellow citizens have to say, but I’m glad no one can tell them not to say it because that means my right to make a fool of myself is protected too.
Obviously, we restrict some freedoms too, in the interest of public safety (the above mentioned child pornography, for example), but those restrictions are few compared to the rest of the world.
So the next time you complain about “that idiot in Washington” (whichever one that is), give thanks that you can.
